Swelling losses haven't held back gains for Veracyte (NASDAQ:VCYT) shareholders since they're up 112% over 5 years

In this article:

Veracyte, Inc. (NASDAQ:VCYT) shareholders have seen the share price descend 17% over the month. But that doesn't change the fact that shareholders have received really good returns over the last five years. In fact, the share price is 112% higher today. We think it's more important to dwell on the long term returns than the short term returns. Ultimately business performance will determine whether the stock price continues the positive long term trend. While the returns over the last 5 years have been good, we do feel sorry for those shareholders who haven't held shares that long, because the share price is down 48% in the last three years.

Since the long term performance has been good but there's been a recent pullback of 3.5%, let's check if the fundamentals match the share price.

Veracyte isn't currently profitable, so most analysts would look to revenue growth to get an idea of how fast the underlying business is growing. Generally speaking, companies without profits are expected to grow revenue every year, and at a good clip. That's because it's hard to be confident a company will be sustainable if revenue growth is negligible, and it never makes a profit.

In the last 5 years Veracyte saw its revenue grow at 30% per year. Even measured against other revenue-focussed companies, that's a good result. So it's not entirely surprising that the share price reflected this performance by increasing at a rate of 16% per year, in that time. This suggests the market has well and truly recognized the progress the business has made. Veracyte seems like a high growth stock - so growth investors might want to add it to their watchlist.

A Different Perspective

It's good to see that Veracyte has rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 23% in the last twelve months. Since the one-year TSR is better than the five-year TSR (the latter coming in at 16% per year), it would seem that the stock's performance has improved in recent times. Given the share price momentum remains strong, it might be worth taking a closer look at the stock, lest you miss an opportunity. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
