Shakespeare’s Richard III spoke of his “winter of discontent,” but Laguna Woods residents had a day of content at the second annual Village Renaissance Faire at the Equestrian Center in May.

As many as 500 guests showed up to enjoy Shakespeare vignettes staged by the Old Pros theater group, a sonnet reading, displays by a blacksmith and a queen’s court procession.

A hula group and the Golden Girls Dance Troupe displayed their talents, and new this year, young women from OC Vaulting performed dances and gymnastics to music on a barrel.

Village artists peddled their creations, a fortune teller read Tarot cards, even some horses took part in the medieval show: Some came dressed up for the part – as did many of the guests.

“It’s wonderful to see the residents and their families enjoying the atmosphere and taking part in the fun, dressed in costumes,” said Laura Cobarruviaz, senior supervisor at the Equestrian Center. “We are lucky to have such a unique venue at the Equestrian Center. It provides a great layout for guests — from the food and bar area that greets guests upon arrival to the huge arena space within the tall walls to stroll, visit vendors and watch performances.”

Also new this year, a pirate ship.

“We decorated the GRF no-host bar with a giant pirate ship that added a true atmosphere of fun and fantasy,” Cobarruviaz said.

With two successful Renaissance Faires under her belt, Cobarruviaz said the event has cemented its spot on the Village calendar.

“We hope to continue making this annual event fun and engaging every year, with new performances, new things to see and lots of merriment for all to enjoy,” she said. “Guests will have to wait until the third annual Renaissance Faire to find out what’s in store.”
